چکیده

Abstract We consider a multi‐item buyer's make versus buy decision. The buyer sells two substitutable products with uncertain demand. Each product requires different item, which the procures from separate suppliers (one for each item) who offer quantity‐payment contracts under asymmetric information. can one of items but not both. compare expected profit between buying both and making item (and other), when it at same cost as supplier, well gain reactive production capability by making. find that is higher than if substitutability above threshold (but extremely high). This because interaction suppliers' increases informational rents more suppliers, compared to increases. On contrary, in complete information scenario wholesale price contracts), we will never prefer long high. These are novel findings on how inter‐linked incomplete influence decision counter‐intuitive manner. Managerially, these results imply multi‐product may keep its supplier even produce supplier.

The “transaction cost” theory of the firm introduced by Coase (1937) has become a standard framework for the study of institutional arrangements. The Coasian framework helps explain not only the existence of the firm, but also its size and scope. Why, in Coase’s (1937, pp. 393–94) words, “does the entrepreneur not organize one less transaction or one more?” Some firms are highly integrated: IBM...

Make , Buy , or Cooperate ?

In 1937, Ronald Coase argued that firms will exist only in environments in which firms perform better than markets could. To create space for firms, Coase suggested that some environments might be plagued by “transaction costs” that cause markets to perform poorly. Coase’s paper was to become the cornerstone of the economic theory of the firm (i.e., the “make or buy” decision: which activities ...
